British English | American English | Meaning |
Waistcoat | Vest | A short piece of clothing with buttons down the front but no sleeves, usually worn over a shirt and under a jacket. |
Vest | Undershirt | A piece of underware worn under a shirt next to skin. |

Courgette | Zucchini | A long vegetable with dark green skin and white flesh. |
Frying Pan | Skillet | A large shallow pan with a long handlesed for frying food in. |
Hob | Stovetop | The top part of cooker where food is cooked in pans. |
Worktop | Counter | A flat surface in a kitchen for preparing food on. |
Flannel | Washcloth | A small piece of cloth used for washing yourself. |
Tap | Faucet | A device for controlling the flow of water from a pipe into a bath. |
Cutlery | Flatware | Knives, forks, and spoons, used for eating and serving food. |
Water Butt | Rain Barrel | A large barrel for collecting rain as it flows off a root. |
Cinema | Movie Theater | A building in which films movies are shown. |
Spanner | Wrench | A metal tool with a specially shaped end for holding and turning nuts and bolts. |
Cot | Crib | A small bed with high sides for a baby or young child. |
Gas Ring | Burner | The part of a cooker/stove that produces a flame. |
Caving | Spelunking | The sport or activity of going into caves under the ground. |
Press Stud/Popper | Snap | A type of button used for fastening clothes, consisting of two metal or plastic sections that can be pressed together. |
